Balázs Bágyi New Quartet (HU)

Drummer and composer Balázs Bágyi is one of the most prominent artists on the Hungarian jazz scene and regularly performs abroad. As a member of many ensembles, he works across almost all genres, and his distinctive, melodic drumming style offers a rich musical experience. He has toured the United States several times and, as the only Hungarian jazz musician, performs regularly in China.

In the new lineup, which has existed since 2013, acoustic, contemporary jazz with elements of post-bop predominates. The ensemble features leading representatives of the middle generation of Hungarian jazz: saxophone titan Sándor “Soso” Lakatos, who completed his studies in the Netherlands; pianist Dezső Oláh, a Junior Prima Award recipient with a classical music education; and Péter Oláh, one of the finest double bassists in Central Europe.

Over the past ten years, the band has performed at numerous European jazz festivals (Bratislava Jazz Days, Jazz Juniors Krakow, Bansko Jazz Festival, Nišville, Mosaic Jazz Fest Sibiu, Sarajevo Winter, Petrovac Jazz Festival, Skopje Summer Festival) and has earned success in several prestigious European clubs (Agharta Jazz Club Prague, B-Flat Berlin, Jazzland Vienna). The ensemble’s repertoire is based on compositions by bandleader Balázs Bágyi, who was named Composer of the Year in 2016.
