It is the deeply honest, elevated and bittersweet symphonies that the Danish musician Lasse Matthiessen profoundly and delicately interprets in his powerful and insistent style, with a not rare explosion of expression. A variability with a sense for the essential which is re-emphasised again and again. Whereas the previous album, “Wildfires”, evokes memories of cinematic rock with a twist of chamber and folk music, the coming album, to be released in the spring of 2017, holds a way more noisy, poppy and expressive sound.

Matthiessen ventures into new terrain. Seemingly effortlessly, he makes the jump from a minimalist singer/songwriter style to leading a band which demands big instrumental orchestrations. What showed its beginnings in “Wildfires” is now completed to perfection. At the very latest, when the fresh tones of the piano cover the voluminous sound structures like slowly dwindling glitter, the listener realizes that something new and bigger is being uncompromisngly pursued.

In 2017, Lasse Matthiessen will continue touring with his live show. In addition to concerts in Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Scandinavia, he will perform in countries like Poland and the Czech Republic, where he has already toured extensively, as well as North America. Whether with full band, as the duo or solo act, Lasse Matthiessen is sincere, authentic and moving. What counts for him is the interaction with his audience – after all, he writes music to share and tell stories.

ZHENYA.jpg

NEVER GROUP is a new album and project by saxophonist Zhenya Strigalev, which presents original music from saxophonist Zhenya (Alex Sipiagin, Aaron Parks, Larry Grenadier, Matt Garrison, Chris "Daddy" Dave, Ambrose Akinmusire, "Foley" McCreary, etc).  "NEVER Group!" is a departure from Zhenya's last project, Smiling Organizm and "Robin Goodie", demonstrating musical sides that have never before been exposed in Zhenya's previous projects. Building a reputation on both sides of the North Atlantic for his adventurous and impassioned emphasis on improvisation, Never Group! is an experience that matches quirky abandon with resolute musicianship and technicality. Strigalev enjoys the challenge of shining a light on the undiscovered and describes the desired on-the-edge thrill that unfolded from the Never Group! sessions: “The whole point of what I do is that I need to surprise myself; I don’t want to record something which sounds exactly like this or like that, because that’s not interesting enough for me. Sometimes I can simply feel a tempo, a mood or an atmosphere, and I know this quartet will provide the opportunity to develop that."

The line up for this tour is a new formation of Never Group which is going to be very special! It will an exciting Quartet with an amazing guitarist Federico Dannemann from Chile, Linley Marthe (Joe Zawinul) and Eric Harland (Dave Holland, Charles Lloyd). We can't describe what it is going to sound like, but expect the unexpectable including fast-energizing grooves, free jazz, reggae and funk.

"always it's a surreal, impressive brew" - ★★★★ Jazzwise

"A typical Strigalev collision of hip jazz virtuosity and surrealism... Strigalev's alto displays bebop agility, shivery lyricism, or sometimes a bluesy Ornetteish swerve."

★★★★ The Guardian

"An addictive mix of colourful vignettes... Strigalev's group could well be the next big thing in jazz."

★★★★ All About Jazz

"A maverick at the heart of modern jazz." ★★★★ The Telegraph

"Addictively and explosively dynamic...one of the most exciting contemporary composers."

Jazzenzo Magazine

“At the root of it all is Strigalev, whose compositions are so strong that they live up to the talents of the musical titans who join him on this CD. This could be the kind of jazz album that has something for everyone, not out of some sense of catering to the crowd, but because the mood it creates is so universally appealing.” 4.5 Stars, Downbeat Magazine. The best albums (Robin Goodie) of 2015.

“Alto saxist Zhenya Strigalev juices up retro-minded postbop with cutting-edge grooves and madcap intensity on his excellent latest, Robin Goodie.” TimeOut, New York critic's pick
