Frisell plakoš (1)-page-001.jpg

Geniuses collide as iconic guitarist Bill Frisell and Kenny Wollesen on drums play brand new and exciting original compositions.

Bill Frisell’s career as a guitarist and composer has spanned more than 35 years and many celebrated recordings, whose catalog has been cited by Downbeat as “the best recorded output of the decade,” including his recent albums for Savoy - Sign of Life with the 858 Quartet, Beautiful Dreamers , All We Are Saying, a collection of John Lennon interpretations and his debut release for OKeh/Sony Masterworks, Big Sur , featuring music commissioned by the Monterey Jazz Festival and composed at the Glen Deven Ranch in Big Sur, for strings, guitar and drums in a quintet comprised of long-time musical associates.

Frisell’s latest album for Okeh/Sony iw When You Wish Upon a Star , a project that germinated at Lincoln Center during Bill’s two-year appointment as guest curator for the Roots of Americana series (September ’13 – May ’15).  It features Frisell with vocalist Petra Haden, Eyvind Kang (viola), Thomas Morgan (bass) and Rudy Royston (drums) performing Frisell’s arrangements and interpretations of Music from Film and Television.  Jazz Times described the project as follows: “unforgettable themes are the real draw here, reconfigured with ingenuity, wit and affection by Frisell and a terrific group.”  The touring version of the band includes Haden, Morgan and Royston.

Always on the lookout for opportunities to "dig around for where I'm coming from," Frisell’s recent project, GUITAR IN THE SPACE AGE ! , is an homage to the inspirational popular music of his formative years made in the wake of “the birth of the Fender Telecaster guitar” - (1951, the same year as Frisell’s own birth) - that, he recalls, "got me super fired-up" about his instrument of choice.  Frisell and his band mates explore material on the Okeh/Sony Masterworks release associated with The Beach Boys, Junior Wells, Pete Seeger, The Byrds, Duane Eddy, The Ventures, The Kinks, Chet Atkins, Link Wray, Speedy West & Jimmy Bryant, The Astronauts, Merle Travis, Johnny Smith and others, as well as original material by Frisell.

Drummer Kenny Wollesen performed on over 30 recordings during the 1990s and, as the decade progressed, gained increasing renown as a musician of astonishing versatility, skill, and ingenuity. He has recorded and toured with all kinds of musicians, from Tom Waits (Wolleson performs on Waits' 1993 collaboration with William S. Burroughs, Black Rider), to Sean Lennon, to Ron Sexsmith (Wollesen performs on his second album, Other Songs).

A founding member of the New Klezmer Trio, Wollesen is also all over N.Y.C.'s downtown jazz and avant-garde musicians' recordings, and has been so active as to tour with Bill Frisell and Myra Melford in the same month. — Joslyn Layne Better than anybody before or since, Kenny Wollesen blended a modern percussionist's drive and eclecticism with an insider's respect for the nineteenth-century klezmer vocabulary. With Kenny on the sticks in 1987 and '88, The Klezmorim had the chops to achieve a funky 1910 street-band groove, and the confidence to fuse klezmer with rock and jazz.

Wollesen stands out as a drummer's drummer -- playing masterfully but loose, peppering the beat with a mulligatawney stew of musical ideas.

clarinet factory.jpg

Seven years since the CD Out of Home and three years since the double album Worx and Reworx, the internationally acclaimed Clarinet Factory are set to release a new studio recording! The new album, titled Meadows and featuring, among other guests, Joe Acheson from Britain’s Hidden Orchestra, the folk ensemble Grunik and the percussionist Dan Šoltis from the Vertigo Quintet, is scheduled to be issued on 3 March by Belgium’s homerecords.be. As Clarinet Factory themselves put it, the new record marks a return to their “natural roots”.

"It wouldn’t be accurate to say that we have been twiddling our thumbs for seven years. Over that time, we have composed the music for the installation of a Modigliani exhibition at the Municipal House in Prague, as well as for the Karel Zeman Museum, and we have accepted several offers for studio work, including from the Hidden Orchestra, Tata Bojs and Václav Neckář. What is more, our aim was to gather together for our new album pieces that have matured at concerts and have met with a positive response on the part of the audience. In this respect, I think we have succeeded, so we didn’t have to spend too much time composing at the studio, thus having avoided the related trials and errors,” says Clarinet Factory frontman Jindřich Pavliš.

The ensemble, made up of Jindřich Pavliš, Luděk Boura, Vojtěch Nýdl and Petr Valášek, recorded the new CD at the SONO studio in Nouzov. Their main goal was to ensure that “all the tracks have a natural thrust, share a resonating colour and dynamics, that the music didn’t have to be made ‘chemically’ at the desk. Given our long-term collaboration, Milan Cimfe and Michal Vaniš know us very well, which is perceptible from the sound.” Moreover, the listeners can look forward to several new facets, which over the past few years have quite markedly changed the Clarinet Factory sound, such as the contrabass clarinet, analogue effects and other wizardry.

An essential and organic component of the Meadows album is formed by the guests, who, according to Pavliš, have played a crucial role in helping Clarinet Factory to "return to our natural roots. It went by itself, subconsciously; we only applied tools somewhat different to those that could have been expected."

The guests featured on Meadows include Joe Acheson from Britain’s Hidden Orchestra, a formation with whom Clarinet Factory have worked with for over three years now. Acheson has created the electronic and overall sound of four of the tracks on the new album. "Acheson is very sensitive, with a recent hobby of his being collecting natural sounds, making field recordings, all of which has fitted very well into the album’s idea and our clarinet-based sound," Clarinet Factory add.

Drummer Daniel Šoltis will perform as a guest.

Filip Spaleny put together his band in 2008. Since then Los Quemados released three albums ("African Sailor" in 2010, "Sirius" in 2012, "Circling Bird" in 2015, all under Hevhetia label) and performed at many concerts in Czech Republic and abroad. The band's repertoire is mostly based on originals written by Filip Spaleny or Jakub Dolezal, the compositions are full of fresh melodic and harmonic ideas and the performance is always a high-octane ride on a wave of jazz-funk fusion with undoubtable instrumental skills. Band personnel: Jakub Dolezal - saxophone - his main influences are Charlie Parker, John Coltrane or Michael Brecker, Jan Balek - piano, keyboards - his favourites are Chick Corea and Michael Jackson, Filip Spaleny - electric bass - he likes Victor Bailey, Felix Pastorius, Hadrien Feraud or Mike Bendy the most, Ondrej Pomajsl - drums - influnced by Vincent Colaiuta, Dave Weckl. Los Quemados members would certainly agree on listening to Weather Report, King Crimson, Frank Zappa, Dirty Loops, Tower Of Power, Pat Metheny or Tribal Tech.

justin lavash.jpg

Justin Lavash (born London 1968) has been based in Prague for ten years and during that time has established himself as a must-see act on the Czech music scene and abroad. His music crosses borders - somewhere between blues, folk and jazz. His phenomenal guitar playing has left many audiences wondering how so much polyphony can be made by one man on one instrument. Lavash identifies himself as a fingerstyle guitarist, following in the footsteps of British folk guitar gurus like Richard Thompson or John Martyn, but he is of a younger generation and traces of New Wave and even dance culture can be found in his music.

Prior to living in the Czech Republic Lavash worked as a guitarist in south London's jazz scene in the 90s and later in the last years of the British Cabaret scene, backing acts whose names shall not be mentioned. His voice is deep and raw and entices the listener to sit and absorb the beautiful songs this artist has penned. In fact his skills as a performer are matched with his talents as a songwriter. He has written or co-written and performed songs by some of the Czech Republic's most repected artists - Lenka Dusilova ("Brother" on Baromantika and "Mayday" on V hodine smrtii), Michal Horacek ("Dizzy and stranded in Prague" from Cesky Kalendar), Sunflower Caravan ("A little bit more"), Monika Naceva ("Milostny Slabiky") and he has also worked with Raduza (Marathon), DG307 and Vladimir Merta. Two of his songs ("Brother" and " Dizzy and stranded in Prague" were on releases which received prizes in the Czech gramophone industry's Andel awards in 2012 and 2013.
