Eloá Gonçalves Trio
JAZZ OF FOUR CONTINENTS

Wednesday 14/06/2023 from 21:00

Brazilian pianist and composer, Eloá Gonçalves holds a Master's degree in Jazz Piano from the University of Music and Performing Arts Graz (Austria), under the guidance of German pianist Olaf Polziehn, as well as a bachelor's and master's degree in Popular Music from UNICAMP (Brazil). To date, she has participated (as bandleader and collaborator) on 16 albums and 5 DVDs. Since 2018, she has led her own trio - The Eloá Gonçalves TRIO - with the debut album Casa, released in 2020 under the Austrian label Alessa Records. The album was praised by critics in magazines such as Downbeat (USA), Jazz'Halo (Belgium), Kulturní Magazin (Czech Republic), and Concerto (Austria). With this album she has been performing at jazz festivals and clubs in Austria, Germany, Poland, Czech Republic, and Slovenia. With her trio in Brazil, she has been playing in important festivals such as SAVASSI Jazz Festival and venues such as SESC. As an educator in Brazil, she was a faculty member at the prestigious Campos do Jordão Festival 2023, in São Paulo. She has recently been touring in Brazil with Sandy, one of the most renowned Brazilian pop singers/songwriters, with whom she has been collaborating since 2010. Eloá just released her second album, About What Moves Things, under Austrian label Alessa Records, featuring French singer/cellist Mathilde Vendramin and German trumpet player, composer/arranger Jakob Helling. In collaboration with Luis Oliveira (drums, Brazil) and Tobias Steinrück (bass, Austria), the trio led by Eloá Gonçalves presents a blend of sonorities that walks between the freedom of jazz—with some references to classical music—and Brazilian music. In the repertoire, you'll hear contemporary jazz with a Brazilian taste in songs such as "Choro de pai e mãe" (Choro, a Brazilian traditional style), and "Valsa do Início" (in which Valsas are also melodically representative in Brazilian instrumental music). Modal and contemporary jazz permeate the compositions with a Brazilian instrumental music character.
