A concert marking the 90th anniversary of Václav Havel’s birth will offer an evening in two different musical forms. The stage will feature a single big band, which will change its line-up and repertoire after the interval. While the first half of the evening will be devoted to the original and conceptual work of Concept Art Orchestra, the second will present a cross-section of the Jazz Dock Orchestra’s repertoire.

As Concept Art Orchestra, the ensemble will perform two new, energetic compositions by Jan Mazura and Tomáš Sýkora, inspired by Havel’s ideas and writings. Both pieces will feature samples of Havel’s voice, which Tomáš Sýkora will modify live using electronics. The programme will also include Štěpánka Balcarová’s suites Chronos and Kairos, likewise inspired by the theme of time—a motif that runs throughout Havel’s work and will appear in several distinct musical forms over the course of the evening.

After the interval, the orchestra will appear as Jazz Dock Orchestra. In a new line-up, it will offer a selection of the finest music it has created throughout its existence. The programme will feature, in particular, compositions by Andy Schofield, Jan Jirucha and Miroslav Hloucala, complemented by selected works from the international big-band repertoire.

The evening will thus offer two interconnected perspectives on a single musical organism: first as Concept Art Orchestra, in a programme inspired by Václav Havel, and then as Jazz Dock Orchestra, performing contemporary and traditional big-band jazz.
