John Coltrane 100 anniversary
On the 100th anniversary of John Coltrane’s birth, the concert pays tribute to the genius who transformed jazz with his vision, “sheets of sound” technique, and the spiritual depth of albums such as "A Love Supreme". Coltrane expanded the harmonic language, inspired generations of improvisers, and opened jazz to transcendence. His legacy will be honored by three leading Czech saxophonists: Marcel Bárta, František Kop, and Ondřej Štveráček.
Marcel Bárta & Vojtěch Procházka
Saxophonist and composer Marcel Bárta has been active on the Czech jazz and improvised music scene since his student days and is now one of its pivotal figures. He is the founder and member of the electro-jazz quintet MUFF, the cult jazz sextet Vertigo, and the duo DoMa Ensemble. This time he appears in a duo with pianist Vojtěch Procházka, his musical companion in Vertigo, who leads his own trio and performs in many other projects.
František Kop Quartet
A sought-after saxophonist and composer, long active in leading jazz projects and big bands; he builds on a solid bop tradition with a sensitive tone. With his band he will perform a suite inspired by John Coltrane. František Kop – ts; Petr Malásek – p; Martin Lehký – b; Pavel “Bady” Zbořil – dr.
Ondřej Štveráček Quartet
A quartet led by a foremost saxophonist known for energy, virtuosic technique, and imaginative improvisation. The group’s music, performed by top-tier musicians, could be described as post-Coltrane bop, and Ondřej Štveráček surely ranks among the finest interpreters of John Coltrane’s legacy. Ondřej Štveráček – ts; Stanislav Mácha – p; Tomáš Baroš – b; Jesse Simpson – dr.
