Kristina Barta “Red Landscape”

Kristina Barta’s Red Landscape is a distinctive and energetic ensemble on the contemporary European jazz scene, led by pianist, composer, and bandleader Kristina Barta (MgA. Kristýna Urbánková Bárta). The quintet is built on strong original compositions and the extraordinary chemistry of five distinctive musicians, whose interactions create tension, depth, and spontaneous freedom. The project’s music draws on a deep understanding of the jazz tradition and the classical roots of its leader, which are transformed here into a modern, open, and internationally accessible musical language. The compositions blend lyricism with rhythmic energy, structured form with improvisational openness, and personal expression with a broader cultural context.

The album *Red Landscape* intertwines contemporary jazz with elements of Czech history and identity. It features original compositions exploring the theme of crossing boundaries—musical, geographical, and human—as well as new arrangements of selected songs, including the iconic “Prayer for Marta,” a symbol of civic courage, and adaptations of Ukrainian folk melodies. The project thus naturally oscillates between intimate chamber music and a strong social subtext. The quintet features the internationally respected saxophonist Jure Pukl, a prominent figure on the New York jazz scene, whose experience from his long-term work in the U.S. brings an additional dimension of sonic and improvisational openness to the ensemble.
