Gospel music, a genre of Christian music, varies according to culture and social context. It is composed and performed for many purposes: aesthetic pleasure, religious or ceremonial purposes, as well as for entertainment and the marketplace. Gospel music, which can be traced to the early 17th century with roots in the black oral tradition, usually has dominant vocals (strong use of harmony) with spiritual lyrics.
