Muff

Muff is a Prague-based ensemble that has been developing its distinctive musical language since 1999, blending elements of groove jazz, jazz-rock fusion, psychedelia, and electronic music. The band consists of five prominent musicians—Marcel Bárta (saxophones), Jiří Šimek (guitar), Jakub Zitko (keyboards), Jakub Vejnar (bass), and Roman Vícha (drums)—who combine meticulously crafted compositions with a radically free improvisational approach. Their music is characterized by a strong emphasis on groove, polymetric rhythms, contrasting forms, repetitive motifs, layered textures and colors, and frequent use of unison lines between saxophone, guitar, and synthesizers. Inspired by the downtown scene of New York clubs such as the Knitting Factory, by the trio Medeski Martin & Wood, and by the electric era of Miles Davis, Muff has developed a unique sonic vocabulary grounded in groove-based structures, multi-layered arrangements, dynamic interplay, and free improvisation. The group has released four critically acclaimed albums, and their live performances are known for their intense energy and constant evolution. At Jazz Dock, they will present a cross-section of their current repertoire alongside newly reimagined versions of older compositions.
