Oliver Steidle & The Killing Popes (GB/GER/FR/JAP)
The second album by The Killing Popes is a striking follow-up to their 2019 debut Ego Pills, from the Berlin-based future jazz collective led by drummer and composer Oli Steidle (winner of the 2022 Deutscher Jazzpreis in the category "Drummer of the Year"). A joint vision by Steidle and producer/keyboardist Dan Nicholls, the new release blends a wide spectrum of creative influences into a rich, idiosyncratic, and highly atmospheric sonic universe. Nicholls and Steidle demonstrate near-telepathic musical interplay across the album’s 11 tracks, weaving together elements of jazz, improvisation, and electronic music into a unique and forward-looking collage. Their music reflects on themes such as capitalism and the cult of the individual, all while maintaining the sharp wit and intelligent edge for which the band is known. The rhythmic architecture of Steidle and Nicholls’ compositions is complex yet purposeful—reshaping and compressing familiar patterns into powerful, innovative grooves. With Ego Kill$, The Killing Popes sound more fearless and inventive than ever. Under the visionary production of Dan Nicholls, they’ve created a bold and ultra-modern album poised to make waves in the contemporary music scene.
