Per Mathisen Trio
Per “Bass Viking” Mathisen is widely considered to be Norway’s answer to NHØP on upright bass and Jaco Pastorius on the electric. Since joining Grammy winning drummer Terri Lyne Carrington’s touring band in 2001, he’s been consistently on the road with a multitude of the world’s greatest jazz & fusion musicians, incl. Alex Acuña, Terje Rypdal, Nguyen Le, Bill Bruford, Keith Carlock, Antonio Sanchez, Geri Allen, Dave Kikoski, Robben Ford, Mike Stern, Bill Evans and many more.
He’s been working with young Czech pianist Daniel Bulatkin since 2018 and as bandmates in several groups they toured all over Europe at major jazz festivals (Czech Republic, Norway, Austria, Romania, Hungary, Bosnia, Slovakia…) alongside players such as Ulf Wakenius, Gary Husband, Gergo Borlai, Bendik Hofseth and many others.
In this new trio project, they reflect on the legacy of their earliest influences – pianist Oscar Peterson and bassist Niels Henning-Ørsted Pedersen – for the year of O.P.’s centennial in 2025. This new project started its run with concerts on the prestigious expo jazzahead! in Bremen and FjordJazz Festival in Sandefjord, where they also performed with the local big band.
