Three of Seven
Šmoldas – Zerna – Simpson

Monday 29/07/2024 from 21:00
Three of the seven continents of our planet contributed one musician each to the creation of the international jazz trio Three of Seven: Europe is represented by Czech guitarist Libor Šmoldas, distant Australia by double bassist Sam Zerna, a native of Adelaide, and North America by drummer Jesse Simpson originally from California. What connects all three is the jazz mecca of New York, the city where Sam Zerna lives, Jesse Simpson lived and studied at the Manhattan School of Music, and where Libor Šmoldas regularly goes to perform and make records. You can look forward to a balanced combination of jazz standards as well as original compositions by all three members of Three of Seven. Music of the trio is full of improvisation, joy of playing and, last but not least, instrumental mastery, which is always in the service of melody and musicality. Due to the different cultures and musical backgrounds from which Libor, Sam and Jesse come, the resulting style is very varied and at the same time harmonious, linked by a common love of jazz history and an open approach to improvisation.
Libor Šmoldas is our leading jazz guitarist. Among the world clubs where he performs, there are Ronnie Scotts, Pizza express, Smalls, Iridium, Blue Note, Birdland, Dear Head Inn, B flat, Porgy and Bess or Bennetts Lane. He played and recorded with world musicians such as George Mraz, Jeff Ballard, Sam Yahel, Bobby Watson, Adam Nussbaum, James Morrison, Brian Charette, Gregory Hutchinson, Jon Faddis and Jay Anderson.
In the Czech Republic, he has collaborated with the complete top of jazz, including, for example, Ondřej Pivec, Robert Balzar and David Dorůžka. He has released eleven albums under his own name and a number of others as a bandmate. The Czech and international press agree on his high qualities and leading position among European jazz guitarists.
Samuel Zerna is an Australian bass player based in New York. In addition to Australia and the USA, he also performs in Europe, Great Britain, China or, for example, New Zealand. Among the musicians he works with are the top New York scene guitarist Mike Moren, saxophonist Chris Cheek and Grammy Award winner Rogerio Boccato. He also regularly collaborates with major artists from the musical theater world, including Tony Award winner Francis Ruffello (Les Miserables) and Catherine Porter. Sam has appeared on over twenty albums including "I Wrote You a Song" by Emma Stephenson and "Come Croon with Me" by rising star Mark William.
Jesse Simpson is a drummer originally from California. He was a student of the legendary drummer Donald "Duck" Bailey, in 2007 he moved to New York where he graduated from the Manhattan School of Music. He has performed on the New York stage with Joe Lovan, John Abercrombie, Chris Cheek, Brian Charette and many others. Since 2022, he lives in the Czech Republic and continues to perform mainly on European stages.
